Tour BHU

Who we are

The Biological Husbandry unit (BHU) was established in 1976 by Lincoln University students and senior lecturer Bob Crowder. In August 2001 it was relaunched as a focus site for organic and sustainable agriculture and is governed by a charitable trust independently of Lincoln University

Many university lecturers and students are using the site for demonstrations, projects and research.
Our current funding support from MAF Sustainable Farming Fund focuses on demonstrating best practice and new technologies that aid organic and sustainable farm operations.

We are also maintaining and adding to the model systems present at the BHU to demonstrate and monitor benefits and considerations of as diverse systems as mixed cropping, No Input, Kyusei Nature Farming and Te Mara-Maori Gardening.

Commercial BHU crop production supports our key aims and helps keep the research relevant.

The self guided tour

To help visitors gaining an impression of the work and projects going on at the BHU we have created this self guided tour.
At significant and interesting locations around the BHU site we have placed poster boards. These posters provide a basic explanation of what is going on in a particular area.
The boards have been arranged in a sequence that allows you to wander around and tour the BHU on your own from poster to poster. You will receive a good overview of the principles followed and work carried out here.
The map points out the location of the poster boards and a suggested round-way to follow. Following the suggested tour you will get to see all the important parts of the BHU.
