Telford Introduction toUsing Chainsaws - Level 2 - 10 Credits

Two days of workshop plus self directed practice as required

Course Content

Establish the core basics of using a chainsaw safely.  A chainsaw is required in a number of industries and pursuits, and it is important to understand how it works and how it is safely used.

Become competent in the use of a chainsaw under expert guidance and find out how to keep it maintained in good working order.

 

Unit Standards

  • 6916  Demonstrate knowledge of the Code of Practice relating to chainsaw use
  • 6917  Operate a chainsaw

 

Tractor Skills - Level 2 - 12 Credits

Length

Tutorials - 2 separate days

Practical training - 1 day

Self directed learning - approx 110 hours which includes practicing tractor skills

Course Content

A three day course targeted at those working with tractors in the rural sector. 

 

Unit Standards

  • 19043 Check and drive a basic wheel tractor on flat terrain
  • 19044 Describe the legal requirements and occupational hazards associated with tractor use
  • 19049 Drive a wheel tractor with an attached implement on flat terrain
  • 19052 Drive a wheel tractor on undulating terrain

 

Tractor Certificate in Rural Workplace Skills - Level 2 - 51 Credits

1 day per week for terms 2 & 3 (Jan - July 2010)

Graduates will have acquired the basic skills required for entry to the workplace in an agricultural or horticultural setting; these include self management, inter-personal communications and workplace communication, computing, and work place health and safety.

Course Descriptors

Tractor Skills

Students will learn the legal requirements for safe tractor use, driving hazards, basic maintenance and checks, how to attach and detach implements and driving skills on flat and undulating terrain

Chainsaw Use and safety

This course covers basic chainsaw maintenance, the legal requirements for chainsaw use, safe handling and an introduction to chainsaw use

Introduction to Computing

On completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate and apply knowledge of a personal computer system and manage and protect data in a personal computer system.

Workplace Health and Safety

This course aims to give students the skills to write an incident report, manage their personal wellness, apply safe work practices and manage health and safety in the workplace.

Explore the Options

This course is designed to give students the skills for daily living in the rural industry. Students will complete a work experience placement and will be able to demonstrate social skills and appropriate behaviour whilst working with an employer's family.

Students will also describe the opportunities, advantages, and disadvantages of rural employment, demonstrate knowledge of farm practices and farm animal behaviour, explore career options relevant to an area of their learning, and explore their own personal development.

Workplace Communication Skills

The topics covered in this course include; communicate information in a specified workplace, inter-personal communication, read texts for practical purposes, fill in a form, writing, apply listening techniques, participate in a team or group to complete routine tasks.
