Organic Distance Programme
The BHU now offers a distance (correspondence) programme in organics.
Qualification:
Certificate in Organics Level 3 - 40 credits
Graduates from the Certificate in Organic Horticulture Level 3 will have key knowledge and skills for successful organic growing. They will acquire knowledge of the key organic principles, the history of organics, including the key people and organisations involved, training providers and career opportunities; the principles and practices of composting; and soil principles and management. Students choose from the following range of electives; design and management of shelter belts; permaculture principles and design; plant structure and function; plan plantings for birds and insectsThey will also develop skills and knowledge for use in employment within the organic horticulture industry or for use in their own gardens or small holdings.
Duration:
This is a part time qualification. Students have one year to complete the qualification form the date of enrolment.
Practical Component:
The programme includes a five day block course held at the Biological Husbandry Unit (BHU), Lincoln University, October 1st - 5th 2012.
Courses:
Students must complete a minimum of 40 credits as follows
Core Courses
Foundations of Organic Horticulture -10 credits
Composting - 5 credits
Soils in Organic Horticulture - 10 credits
Electives (students must complete a minimum of 15 credits from the following options)
Plan plantings for insect and bird retention - 5 credits
Natural Shelter - 5 credits
Structure and Growth of Plants - 5 credits
Permaculture in Organic Horticulture - 10 credits
